Navigating Commercial SolarEdge Power Optimizer Replacements

If a single commercial SolarEdge power optimizer fails in a large-scale or business array, tracking down the exact legacy model—such as a P600, P700, P800p, or P850—can be difficult as early versions phase out. Fortunately, SolarEdge designed commercial power optimizers with specific cross-compatibility rules, allowing you to swap alternative models directly into the same high-power string without completely redesigning your array.

Understanding Commercial P-Series Inter-Compatibility

When replacing a failed commercial optimizer, all units within the same PV string must be inter-compatible, and the replacement model must match or exceed the power rating of the connected PV modules.

1. Dual-Module Commercial Optimizers (P600, P650, P701, P730, P801)

These models are built to support multiple panels per optimizer (commonly dual 60-cell or 72-cell modules).

  • Replacement Strategy: Models like the P650, P701, P730, and P801 can generally be mixed and replaced within strings shared among that specific family group.

  • Important Exceptions: The P605 is a single-module high-power commercial unit and cannot be mixed with any other power optimizer model on the same string.

2. High-Power Dual/Bifacial Units (P800p, P850, P950, P1100, P1101)

Designed for high-power, high-current, or bifacial commercial modules, this family forms the backbone of many mid-to-large commercial systems:

  • Interchangeability: P800p, P850, P950, and P1101 units are broadly inter-compatible within the same string architecture.

  • Upgrades & Replacements: P850 successfully succeeded earlier units like the P800s and can be used interchangeably. Additionally, P1101 can serve as a replacement option for legacy P860 and P960 units when adhering to proper series-wiring guidelines.

Step-by-Step: Replacing a Commercial Optimizer

  1. Verify Part & Module Specs: Check the label of the failed commercial unit and confirm your module's Open Circuit Voltage (Voc) at minimum ambient temperature does not exceed the replacement optimizer's maximum input voltage.

  2. Select a Compatible Part: Choose a matching or cross-compatible commercial model from our inventory that fits your string architecture.

  3. Pair to the Inverter: Once the physical replacement is complete, execute the standard pairing process on your SolarEdge commercial inverter so the system detects the new hardware and resumes full reporting. For details, check out this guide on Pairing Optimizers to a SolarEdge Inverter.
